“Finding employment is like giving someone self-worth,” said Community Caring Council’s EDGE Coordinator, Christian Freeman.
Freeman has worked with nonprofits and employment services for over a decade. A passion for finding others employment along with a grant to partner with Family Support Division manifested the creation of the Empowering Dads to Gain Employment (EDGE) program to help individuals with child support cases gain employment. EDGE provides their services in six local county areas including Bollinger, Cape Girardeau, Mississippi, New Madrid, Perry and Scott counties.
“I love the opportunity, [working with EDGE]. I really feel like it is a passion for me to be able to help this go, run and function,” said Freeman.
Freeman and the EDGE team of employment specialists help individuals create a marketable resume, practice interviewing skills and techniques, develop an individualized employment plan, and receive assistance in their job search. Once someone has found employment with assistance from their EDGE Employment Specialist, the support does not stop.
“It’s not a one-time shop,” says Freeman.
Retention Specialists provide support and monitor the individual’s employment, find new placements if the first job placement is not the right fit, solve problems on issues with employment, provide information for complying with child support orders, and help parents reconnect with their children. There is a bright future ahead for EDGE. Freeman sees growth in the future with hopes of continued success in the current counties and seeing an expansion to other surrounding counties to provide more opportunities for individuals and families to succeed.
