Independence/Silver Springs Intersection to Open This Week, Earlier than Expected

Drivers will once again have access to the intersection of Independence and Silver Springs Road in Cape Girardeau starting about 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25.
The intersection closed on Monday, Oct. 17 for completion of a cross-road drainage structure as a part of the Whitener Detention Basin Project. Work was expected to last up to three or four weeks, but workers were able to begin opening parts of the intersection in just more than one week, with the entire intersection opening to traffic within two weeks.
The road closure was done simultaneously to the Independence roundabout project to take advantage of lessened traffic flow along Independence.
Crews will begin removing construction equipment and signage during the afternoon of Oct. 25, opening Independence at Silver Springs and the northbound leg of Silver Springs toward Themis Street. The southern leg of Silver Springs, toward Saint Francis Medical Center, will reopen by Friday afternoon, Oct. 28.
Work is ongoing further east on Independence for the roundabout project at this time, so drivers are still cautioned to watch for workers near the area and consider an alternate route along that portion of Independence.
