2016 Domestic Violence Awareness Month Proclamation at Oct. 17 City Council Meeting

Safe House for Women Shelter Director Kim Dixon and Executive Director Jessica Hill were on hand to receive a proclamation from Mayor Harry Rediger honoring October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Cape Girardeau during the Oct. 17 City Council meeting.
The proclamation’s text reads as follows:

Whereas, for the past twenty-five years, the Safe House for Women has provided comprehensive services to women and children in the Cape Girardeau community who have experienced domestic violence; and
Whereas, the mission of the Safe House for Women is to provide safe refuge and support services to those affected by domestic abuse and violence; to provide training and education to increase awareness of and prevention of domestic violence; and to advocate for social change and public policy that protect a person’s right to live free of abuse; and
Whereas, over 1,400 cases of domestic violence were reported in Cape Girardeau County and its surrounding counties in the past year; and
Whereas, the Safe House for Women received more than 700 crisis calls from victims of domestic violence and provided safe shelter to 200 women and children in the past year; and
Whereas, the Safe House for Women served an additional 300 individuals with counseling, advocacy, case management and support services through their outreach office; and
Whereas, domestic violence is not confined to any specific group or people, but affects people of all races, backgrounds, economic levels, education levels, family structures, ages and religions; and
Whereas, the crime of domestic violence violates members of our community’s privacy, dignity, security and humanity in the form of physical, emotional, sexual, psychological and economic abuse; and
Whereas, advocates, professionals, volunteers and community members concerned with domestic violence will devote the month of October to raising awareness about the causes, interventions and prevention of this devastating crime;
Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved that I, Harry Rediger, Mayor of the City of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, do hereby declare the month of October, 2016, as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and reaffirm this City’s commitment to ending domestic violence in our community.
