One Cape: Betty Seesing Roth

Betty-Seesing-Roth-FINALMy name is Betty Seesing Roth. I am the Administrative Assistant at the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). One of my primary duties is to welcome guests who come to visit Cape from around the world. I have the pleasure of bragging about our city and the wonderful things we have to see and do.
One of the greatest compliments we receive here at the CVB is how nice and welcoming the people of Cape Girardeau are, from the maintenance guy at the hotel to the clerk at the gas station. They are all so engaging and they want people to experience their town. I take great pride in that we’re such a nice community to visit.
Last week we had guests from Hong Kong, and Switzerland. This week we had a gentleman from Germany who was biking across the country and stopped to put his toe in the Mississippi River. The river is a powerful attraction.
I’m the youngest of 6. My father, J.T. Seesing, operated Cape Central Airways, the fixed base operation at the airport, for 25 plus years. Welcoming passengers to Cape Girardeau from all over the globe was a great joy for him. When most kids were going camping and fishing we were at the airport. We were helping out at the auctions, working the line, working in the gift shop, teaching people to fly, mowing the grass and anything else that needed to be done. Of the six kids, five of us learned to fly. In the 70’s learning to fly for a sixteen year old girl was an amazing opportunity. My dad was raised in Leopold, Missouri; his dad, Henry Seesing, owned the tavern there. He was the ‘welcome committee’ for Leopold. He was the bar tender, he was the loan officer, he was – oh, the countless people who learned to play pool there. So, in a way, my family has been a part of the welcoming committee for portions of Southeast Missouri for three generations.
I have the best job in the world!
