The City Council approved the financial plan for the 2016-2017 year at their June 20 meeting, the third of three public meetings on the topic. The final budget is now available online at www.cityofcape.org/finance.

In preparing the annual operating budget, staff had reviewed and revised current services with the goal of achieving greater efficiency and effectiveness in their delivery. The current budget provides Cape Girardeau’s citizens a quality level of municipal services that are within available revenues.
BUDGET 2016-2017 OVERVIEW
The Council authorized a total operating budget of $58,469,692. Notable items from the July 1, 2016 – June 30, 2017 annual budget include:
- Three new police officer positions. Seventy-five per cent of these costs will be grant funded for three years.
- Increased specialty pay for some public safety and public works positions.
- Changing the $30,000 originally budgeted for the Airport observation deck to general capital improvements at the Airport.
- Continued support for partners: Cape Girardeau Transit Authority, Old Town Cape, Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce / MAGNET and the Convention and Visitors Bureau.
