A free Back to School Fair will be held Tuesday, July 26 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Cape Girardeau Central Middle School, 1900 Thilenius. Although the fair is being
held in Cape, families with students in Pre-K through 12th grade from all area schools are invited to attend.
The Back to School Fair is a collaborative effort of United Way of Southeast Missouri, The Salvation Army, Cape Girardeau Public Schools, ABC Today/Big Brothers, Big Sisters, the Urban Kids Project, and many nonprofits and businesses in the area. In addition to providing registration for free school supplies, the fair will offer many resources for families, including free immunizations, dental screenings, and health insurance counseling. Free hotdogs and ice cream will be provided along with many fun activities for all ages, including a D.J. and games.
Various door prizes and items will be given away, such as wipes from Procter & Gamble, haircuts from the Hair Loft, free Domino’s Pizza, and coupons for free cuts from Trendsetters.
In previous years The Salvation Army held a school supply fair, but school counselors and other community organizations wanted to build the event into an opportunity to provide additional resource information and family fun. Mike Bowers, Youth Director of The Salvation Army, explains, “We’re happy to see that the fair has grown into a collaborative effort that includes not just the agencies and programs, but also the schools and local businesses who want to see area students get excited about the upcoming school year. In turn, with everyone working together, we are able to reach more families and make a larger impact in the lives of the students. That’s what the fair is all about.”

    • If you’d like to register for the free school supplies for after United Way’s stuff the bus event, you’ll need to bring proof that your child or children qualify for the reduced lunch program.
