Fire at 238 South Sprigg Street – June 7, 2016

At 2:04 p.m. on June 7, the Cape Girardeau Fire Department were called to 238 South Sprigg Street for a structure fire. Upon the arrival of the first 2 units, there was heavy smoke and fire coming from the front of the building on the second floor. The fire was on the second floor and had spread to the adjoining apartment on the second floor. There were 2 exposures: one on the east side and one to the north. Command called for a second alarm about 3 minutes after the arrival of the first units. The fire was contained to the fire building and only smoke damage to the exposures.
There were a total of 7 units from Cape Girardeau Fire Department, along with 24 on-duty and off-duty personnel responding. There were also 7 units from other departments including Scott City, Jackson, East County, Gordonville and Sikeston, consisting of additional 21 personnel.
The initial time of the call was 2:04 p.m., and the last unit left at 8:16 p.m. There were 2 tenants living in the upstairs apartments that will not be able to return. The fire is still under investigation through the State Fire Marshal’s office and personnel from the Cape Girardeau Fire Department.
