Fire at 426 North Frederick Street – May 7, 2016

The Cape Girardeau Fire Department on May 7 at 8:17 a.m. responded to the report of fire and smoke showing from the structure located at 426 North Frederick Street.  Heavy black smoke was visible from Station 1. The “search” mode was called by Battalion 1, and command was established. Crews were also directed to protect the houses on each side. The ladder crew forced open the front door and began a primary search. Additional crews deployed hand lines and began attacking the fire. Command declared a “second” alarm, which brings mutual aid companies to the scene. The origin of the fire was believed to be on the back porch. The house was approximately 50 percent involved upon the Fire Department’s arrival. Additional searches were completed. All occupants were accounted for. One firefighter was slightly injured and did not require immediate medical attention. The structure sustained heavy fire and water damage. The houses on each side suffered moderate heat damage but no fire damage. The Missouri State Fire Marshall’s office was called in to assist with the investigation. The incident is currently still under investigation.

Mutual aid was received from Jackson, Scott City, East Cape County, and Gordonville fire departments. Cape Girardeau Police assisted with evacuations from the exposures, crowd control, scene management, and investigation.
