Hopper Road Closure Begins May 9: Veterans Memorial Drive Extension, Safety Improvements

Phase five of the Veterans Memorial Drive project in Cape Girardeau will close Hopper Road at the Interstate 55 overpass, starting on May 9. This work is being completed as a part of the Transportation Trust Fund 4, approved by voters in August 2010.
Work will primarily take place during the summer months, with a final completion expected in fall 2016 (weather permitting). Detours will be posted near the closure.
During the work, Veterans Memorial Drive will be extended from Scenic Drive down to Hopper Road, facilitating quicker access to North Kingshighway and Interstate 55 from surrounding subdivisions. The area of Hopper Road closing will be straightened, removing previously curvy and accident-prone areas. A stop sign will also be added, providing additional safety enhancements for those living near the area.
Other street improvement projects ongoing in Cape Girardeau include the annual asphalt overlay work and neighborhood street repair projects.

  1. Do you have a drawing showing the connection point at hopper and the complete project, both the project to Hopper and it’s connection later down to Vantage drive?

    • Checked with Development’s engineering staff. There is, to their knowledge, no rendering yet south of Hopper Road. They do have the plans for the in-progress section of Veterans Memorial Drive and how it ends at Hopper. Contact Jake Garrard via phone or email – would be happy to personally discuss any further questions you have: 573-339-6327 or mgarrard[at]cityofcape.org. Hope that helps!
