Project Update, March 2016: Cape Girardeau SportsPlex Construction Starts

The Cape Girardeau SportsPlex project officially started construction the week of Jan. 24 with a clearing of the access road off of Limbaugh Lane to allow easier access to the site along with leveling the site and building “foot print” and removing quite a bit of bedrock. Feb. 18 kicked off the start of the actual building and over the last several weeks Penzel Construction crews have been preparing the building foundation and the soccer/turf portion of the building which is closest to Interstate 55 and is 98 percent complete! Crews will then move to the lobby area and then the wood court side of the building. The first load of steel will arrive early next week which will be used to begin framing the SportsPlex and by the end of March you will be able to see the building take shape!
After the Cape Girardeau SportsPlex opens in early 2017, the City of Cape Girardeau anticipates drawing sporting events and tournaments from at least four neighboring states. The facility can accommodate larger tournaments during the winter months, unlike our Osage and Shawnee Park Centers’ capacities. The new events and tournaments will increase hotel night stays and visits to local restaurants and retail, especially during the cooler months of November through March. It is a critical economic development project that is sure to bring more FUN to Cape Girardeau!
