Mayor Rediger read a proclamation for Soles4Souls week, March 27-April 3, during the March 21 City Council meeting. The Proclamation text is as follows:
Whereas, Soles4Souls is a nonprofit social enterprise that advances the fight against global poverty by monetizing used shoes and clothing to create sustainable jobs and fund direct relief efforts around the world; and Whereas, since 2006, Soles4Souls has given away more than 27 million pairs of new and gently worn shoes to people in 127 countries, and the United States; and
Whereas, it is estimated that Americans have 1.5 billion pairs of unused shoes lying in their closets, Soles4Souls can use each and every one of these pairs to make a tangible difference in someone’s life; and Whereas, Soles4Souls has earned glowing endorsements from Hollywood stars and professional athletes, but the people that truly make the non-profit organization effective are those who clean out their closets to personally drop off their new or gently worn shoes at a participating location; and
Whereas, Johnny W. Bagwell has assisted in transporting hundreds of pairs of shoes from the region to our collection center at St. Andrew Lutheran Church for Soles4Souls. We are proud to dedicate this year’s shoe collection week in his memory; and
Whereas, Soles4Souls, St. Andrew Lutheran Church, Marcy’s Planet Shoes, Baptist Student Center, and the Southeast Missouri State University Soles4Souls On Campus Student Organization will be collecting new or gently worn footwear and donations to ship the shoes to a person in need, whether they are victims of a natural disaster or subject to living in extreme poverty.
Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved that I, Harry E. Rediger, Mayor of the City of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, do hereby proclaim March 27 – April 3 Soles4Souls Week in the City and encourage all citizens to support the efforts of Soles4Souls so that it may continue to help communities all over the world in times of need.
In Witness Whereof I have hereunto set my hand and caused to be affixed the Seal of the City of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, this 7th day of March 2016. Harry E. Rediger, Mayor
