Lifeguard Training Available in Cape Girardeau

Central Pool summerSeveral options for lifeguard training are available this winter and early spring through the City of Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department.
The Lifeguard Training course is for students who desire to become lifeguards, including comprehensive skill instruction on equipment-based rescues, spinal injury management, post rescue care and other topics incorporating the most current principles of aquatic safety. This course also includes First Aid Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and use of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Some sessions include water park certification.
Students must successfully complete a pretest before being allowed to take the full course. Pre-requisite skills include 300 yard continuous swimming, demonstrating rhythmic breathing, and proper stroke competencies; a timed brick dive; and treading water with no hands for 2 minutes. Students who do not pass the pretest will be issued a full refund for the price of the course (minus a $5 administrative fee), or they may transfer to another session.
Classes take place at Central Municipal Pool. Each class is Friday 5-9 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Complete attendance in this class is mandatory; make-ups will not be provided for missed classes.
