Fire at 803 Themis – Jan. 6, 2015

On Jan. 6, 2016 at 8:55 p.m., the Cape Girardeau Fire Department was called to 803 Themis for smoke coming from the roof. Before our arrival, the Cape Girardeau Police Department notified us that there was visible fire in the attic. We responded to the location, and about 1 block away we radioed to dispatch that there was moderate smoke coming from the attic area. The initial engine that responded pulled a pre-connected line and advanced it to the second floor via the stairwell. The ladder truck arrived and went into hydraulics and raised the ladder to the roof. The crew went to the roof, and using a chainsaw cut a hole in the roof over the fire to remove the smoke from the structure. They also cut a second hole to assist in removal of heat and smoke. Battalion 2 arrived, assumed command, and called for a working fire due to the location of the fire. The Police Department advised us that both apartments had been vacated and everyone was accounted for. The second engine arrived and pulled a second pre-connected line to the second floor to assist the first engine crew. The third engine crew arrived and assisted on the second floor with fire operations. The fourth engine arrived and assisted in outside operations.
Jackson and Scott City fire departments were dispatched to the city for mutual aid, along with 3 additional personnel from Cape Girardeau Fire Department.
The 3 occupants in the two apartments will be displaced while repairs are being made. The Red Cross are assisting them in housing for the short term.
