Garden Grub Cooking Classes: 2016 Schedule Announced

pasta-998783_960_720Come make yummy, fresh food with us! Starting at 6 p.m. on Jan. 19, free “garden grub” cooking classes will be available in Cape Girardeau at the Shawnee Park Center. Classes are being offered in conjunction with the University of Missouri Extension.
Registration is available through the City of Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department by calling 573-339-6340. Funding for the classes is provided by the Healthy Eating Active Lifestyles (HEAL) Grant received by Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center.

Tuesday, Jan. 19  6-7:30 p.m.  Healthy Soups for Winter
Sharon and Weldon Unterreiner, Master Gardeners
Sharon and Weldon will share information on the top ten soups in America. Learn how to put many of the soups together using fresh and pantry ingredients.
Tuesday, Feb. 16 6-7:30 p.m. Cooking from Scratch: Whole Grains and Beans
Ross Peterson, Laughing Stalk Farmstead
Discover the basics of preparing whole grains and beans including rice, quinoa and couscous. Find out easy ways to include them into your daily meals.
Tuesday, April 26  6-7:30 p.m.  Healthy Salads, Sauces and Dressings
Sharon and Weldon Unterreiner, Master Gardeners
Sharon and Weldon will show how to make many salads for a variety of meals. Learn how to make gravy from a rue and a slurry to thicken different dishes. Discover the importance of dressings, how they are made, and the ingredients necessary to make them delicious!
Tuesday, June 28  6-7:30 p.m.  Herbs – From the Garden to the Kitchen
Master Gardener Jamie Koehler will offer a how-to class on growing and using culinary herbs. Participants will learn how to start, grow, and harvest different culinary herbs. Class will also include cooking techniques to use herbs to enhance the flavor of your meals. Samples offered will demonstrate how using fresh herbs from your garden will make your dishes POP!
