Seven times a day in the United States, someone dies in a home fire. Even more frequently, American Red Cross volunteers provide help to families who have lost their homes to devastating fires.
The American Red Cross has launched this nationwide Home Fire Preparedness Campaign with the goal of reducing the number of home fire deaths and injuries by 25 percent over the next 5 years.
“Home fires are America’s biggest disaster threat and unlike most disasters, they can be prevented,” said Kate Struttman, Disaster Program Manager for the American Red Cross’ Southeast Missouri Chapter.
As part of the campaign, the Red Cross in our area is joining with local fire departments, community groups, and local businesses to canvass neighborhoods, teach people about fire safety, and install free smoke alarms in high-risk areas.
“The most effective ways to protect yourself and your home from fire are to have a family plan, identify a meeting spot outside of the home, identify and remove fire hazards and to install and maintain working smoke alarms in the home,” said Struttman.
