New Shawnee Park Community Demonstration Garden in Cape Girardeau Opens with Ribbon Cutting on July 20

A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for Monday, July 20 at 11 a.m. for the new Shawnee Park Community Demonstration Garden and Urban Orchard in Cape Girardeau. The event takes place at the Shawnee Park Center, 835 South West End Boulevard.
The Demonstration Garden is the newest of four community gardens supported by the City of Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation department and longtime volunteer Robert Harris. Harris has championed the three previously-existing community gardens for many years. The other gardens are located along South Fountain Street, in the Red Star area, and at Washington Park. The gardens are also supported by the University of Missouri Extension Master Gardeners.
The new Demonstration Garden was made possible through cooperation with the Parks and Recreation Department and the Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center. The Health Center in 2014 received a grant from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, providing additional funding for enhancement of each existing community garden and adding educational programs. The grant funds came as a part of the Preventive Health Services Block Grant, issued by the Centers for Disease Control for healthy eating and active living.
One education program offered in spring and summer 2015, the Green Thumb Garden Workshop series, gave free classes to the community and were well-attended. The classes provided information about growing fruits and vegetables, understanding types of soils, canning, preserving and more.
The grant was renewed for 2015-2016, and additional programs are planned.
