The at 1:57 a.m. on May 7, the Cape Girardeau Fire Department was called to the report of heavy smoke coming from an apartment in the Sundance Apartment Complex at 921 Hackberry. A police officer assisted the tenant from the structure. E-1 and L-1 arrived on scene and determined the fire was out. The tenant used a fire extinguisher to extinguish an unintentional fire on the stove that had extended to cabinets. The apartment received heavy fire damage to the kitchen cabinets and smoke damage. The tenant refused medical attention and was the only one home. The tenant was alerted by smoke detector activation.
