The Cape Girardeau Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at 213 S. Middle @ 01:15 a.m. on March 4. Upon arrival, heavy smoke was showing and fire from the roof line on the north side of the house. The residential house is a wood frame, 1 ½ story. The occupant was out of the house and reported nobody else in the house. Fire crews attempted to make an interior attack, but were pulled out due to rapidity deteriorated conditions. Fire crews went to a defensive operation until the fire was knocked down enough to safely reenter the structure.
Scott City and Jackson Fire Departments were called to the scene to support Cape Girardeau Fire Department personnel. East County and Gordonville Fire Districts were notified to back fill Cape Girardeau’s stations with CGFD off duty personnel.
Fire crews were on scene for approximately 3 hours. The fire started on the first floor around the water heater and has been considered accidental.
