The City of Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department will host their developmental SMASH volleyball leagues starting on March 26. Games will begin on April 11.
SMASH (Serve, Move, Attack, Set, Hit) is a program that allows children from the third through sixth grades the opportunity to learn the basics of volleyball. Coaches and players from Cape Central, Saxony Lutheran, and Jackson High Schools teach children how to pass, set, serve, and spike. The program is a mixture of practices and matches, which take place at either the Osage Centre, Shawnee Park Center, Cape Central High School, and the A. C. Brase Arena.
There are two age divisions for SMASH: 3rd/4th grade and 5th/6th grade. A SMASH Select division is also offered. It is intended for 5th and 6th graders who have played at least one season of SMASH, who are more advanced in play or have played in another organized volleyball league. SMASH Select teams are coached by parents/volunteers and will compete in a more competitive environment.
The sign up fee is $45 per child, which includes a t-shirt and volleyball. Register by March 4. Registration is limited to 80 players per age group. To register or for questions, please contact Heather Davis at 573-339-6731 or visit www.cityofcape.org/volleyball.
