Cape Girardeau Announces Second Annual Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition on Broadway, Beginning in April

Information from a Arts Council of Southeast Missouri press release

The Public Art Committee of the City of Cape Girardeau will launch the city’s second public art outdoor exhibition on Friday, April 10 (note: the original news release stated the date as April 3, but the date has been changed). The show consists of seven substantial pieces to be placed along the Broadway Corridor in Cape Girardeau for a year, culminating in early April 2016.

The 2015 Cape Girardeau Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit was juried by the Public Art Committee. This group consisted of representatives from the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, Old Town Cape, Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Cape Girardeau. Chris Wubbena, Professor of Sculpture at Southeast Missouri State University, led the jurying of this year’s exhibit. He has exceptional experience in creating sculptures, and jurying exhibitions.

By hosting the Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit on Broadway, the Committee hopes to achieve two primary goals: increase the number of arts-related activities within the region and provide an additional revitalization strategy for Old Town Cape.

“The first Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit was met with a very positive reception by the community. So far we have heard great things from those who enjoy driving by the sculptures every day, as well as those who have come to town specifically to see the exhibit” said Murielle Gaither, Executive Director of the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri.

The seven artists for the exhibition are:

  • Mike Baur – West Chicago, IL
  • Sarah Deppe – Madison, WI
  • Kurt Dyrhaug – Beaumont, TX
  • James Johnson – Charleston, IL
  • Nathan Pierce – Cape Girardeau, MO
  • Stephanie Sailer – Swisher, IA
  • Bounnak Thammavong – Swisher, IA

The pieces will be unveiled at a special reception and kick-off event at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 10 at the Vasterling Suites Courtyard, located on the southwest corner of the intersection of Broadway and Fountain Street (MAP). The reception will be open to the public after which participants are encouraged to walk Broadway and view the pieces.

Funding for the exhibit was provided by: City of Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department, Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Old Town Cape.
