  • Don’t buy more than you can carry. Bring a friend with you or ask for employee assistance when carrying packages to your car.
  • Shop with a single credit card. It’s easier to cancel one card than several.
  • Deter pickpockets by carrying your purse, wallet and phone close to your body. Never leave these items unattended.
  • Have your keys in hand when approaching your vehicle. Check the back seat before getting in.
  • Make a plan in case you get separated from your children that includes a central meeting place.
  • If you’re going to multiple stores, put your previous purchases in your vehicle’s trunk. Bags full of video games and other electronics make an enticing target. Try not to leave packages visible in your car windows.

  • Make sure that the website you’re browsing for items is reputable before making online purchases.
  • Make purchases only on websites with SSL encryption. Look for the “https://” at the beginning of the website’s address and/or a lock symbol somewhere in the browser window before submitting transactions.
  • Opt to make online purchases with a credit card, not debit cart. Credit cards offer better fraud protection, making it more likely to get all of your money back should you be affected by a scammer.
