Starting on Oct. 6, the Public Works leaf pick up program will be back in action. The leaf program consists of three phases:
Phase 1, Month of October: The leaf truck will travel throughout the city continuously on unscheduled routes, possibly reaching residences more than once.
Phase 2, Nov. 3-Dec. 19: The leaf truck will run designated routes along the map during dates outlined for each route. The leaf truck will only collect leaves at each residence one time during this phase. To ensure the best possible service, it’s important that residents rake their leaves to the curb before the start date of their designated route. Also, please be aware that weather can affect route schedules, delaying leaf pick up.
Phase 3, Dec. 19 (or weather permitting/end of Phase 2): After all scheduled routes have been completed in Phase 2, the leaf truck will travel throughout the city continuously on unscheduled routes, possibly reaching residences more than once. This will continue through March 27.
In all, residents have four options to dispose of their leaves:
- Curbside leaf pick up program: Residents rake loose leaves to their curb at any time during the season. Public Works will make several stops during the season in each designated zone. The curbside leaf collection program begins on Oct. 6 and runs through March 27.
- Haul your own leaves: Residents may choose to pick up their own leaves and take them, for free, to the holding area at 433 Cooper Street (Third Street, off of LaCruz, across from Kasten Masonry). The holding area’s hours are Monday through Friday from noon to 4 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. No limbs may be brought to the holding area.
- Purchase composting bags: Composting bags are available for purchase at City Hall, Public Works, Schnucks, or Food Giant. The price is $6.25 for a bundle of five bags. Once you’ve used the bags to collect leaves, then you can call Public Works to take advantage of their Wednesday Special Pick Up service. Charges may apply. Call Public Works at 573-339-6351 for more information or to schedule pick up.
- Mulching: Mulch the leaves back into your lawn to add nutrients and improve your lawn’s health.
