The Cape Girardeau Police Department would like to alert the public about the passing of many counterfeit payroll checks in Cape Girardeau County. Since the end of July 2014 to the middle of August several counterfeit payroll checks have been cashed at local business. The suspects have avoided banks instead taking the checks to local business that provide check cashing services to the public. The payroll checks are counterfeit ones made up to appear as if they were issued by well established companies. The police department is asking business to be diligent when presented with any checks that they feel may not be legitimate. Asking for more than one form of identification or some proof of employment are ways to make it more difficult for the suspects. If presented with a check that appears to be counterfeit please contact the police department.
