The Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce named Heather Fisher, Mary LeGrand, Ellen Pannier, Julie Stausing and Dr. Willie Redmond the 2013 Educators of the Year. The five outstanding educators were honored at the Educator Appreciation Reception in October at the Show Me Center Arena. The honorees received the prestigious Crystal Apple Award, a $500 check and a commemorative video at the banquet. The title sponsor for this event was Wood & Huston.
This is the twentieth year of the Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce awarding the Educator of the Year Awards. The selection process opened for nominations in late April, nominees submitted completed applications in July and then a selection committee, made up of volunteers from the Chamber membership, made final review and selection of the honorees. Angie Umfleet of Chap Arnold Insurance and Chairman of the Educator of the Year Selection Committee stated, “The Educator of the Year Award is very significant to receive. This is an award the business community selects and honors the hard work and dedication of educators in our community. On behalf of the members of the Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce we would like to thank all area educators for their service in educating our future workforce.”
Heather Fisher is a kindergarten teacher at Blanchard Elementary for the past two years with a total of three years in the teaching profession. Prior to teaching Ms. Fisher served as an Early Childhood Specialist at Southeast Missouri State University. She holds a Teaching Certification Graduate Program from Webster University, a Master’s Degree in Education and Curriculum Instruction from William Woods University, and a Bachelor’s Degree in General Studies with an emphasis in Child Development from Southeast Missouri State University.
Mary LeGrand teaches in the Central Studies Program at Cape Central High School and has over 29 years in the teaching field. She started with Cape Public Schools in 1998 serving in math teaching capacities at the elementary, middle school, junior high and the alternative education center. Ms. LeGrand also taught at St. Augustine School in Kelso, Missouri, prior to working in Cape Girardeau. She holds a Master’s in Education and Bachelor’s in Elementary Education from Southeast Missouri State University.
Ellen Pannier is a Biology and Honors Human Anatomy Teacher at Cape Central High School for the past seven years. Ms. Pannier has over 24 years in the teaching profession. She has taught in the New Franklin, Fayette and Boonville School Districts prior to coming to Cape Girardeau. Ms. Pannier has a Master’s in Education from Lindenwood University, a Bachelor’s in Science Education from Central Methodist University and an Associate’s in General Education from Mineral Area College.
Julie Stausing is an English Teacher at Cape Central High School for the past eight years. She holds a Master’s Degree in Teacher Leadership and a Bachelor of Science in English Education from Southeast Missouri State University.
Dr. Willie Redmond – 2013 University Educator of the Year
Dr. Willie Redmond is a Professor with the Department of Economics and Finance with the Harrison College of Business and a Faculty Fellow with the Office of the Provost at Southeast Missouri State University. Dr. Redmond has over 16 years as faculty member with 14 of them serving at Southeast Missouri State. He holds a Doctorate in Economics, a Master’s in Business Administration and a Bachelor’s of Arts in Economics from the University of South Carolina.
