On Friday, Oct. 11, the City of Cape Girardeau Police Department hosted their first ever “Tweet Along” event from their Twitter account, @CapePolice, using the hashtag (search/categorical term) #CGPDtweetalong.
During the event officers posted to the Police Department’s Twitter account from their patrol car from noon to 4 p.m. Posts included everything from patrolling to responding to traffic accidents. Photos were limited because of privacy issues.

The Tweet Along was organized to give the community a better understanding of some of the daily tasks of a police officer. Police Chief Wes Blair believes events like these will encourage communication between the community and the Police Department.
Several of the day’s most popular tweets involved discussion of at least one motor vehicle accident and making sure to remember license plate renewal stickers:
Police Department Public Information Officer Darin Hickey coordinated the event and was excited about the event’s inaugural success. By hosting the Tweet Along, the Police Department pushed their Twitter following to more than 400 people.
Blair hopes that interacting with the community will spark people’s interests in what the Police Department is doing. He also hopes to implement weekly tips through Twitter, such as their traffic tip Tuesdays, and eventually listing more home safety tips throughout the week.
