Cape Girardeau's Dog Town Playground Opening in November 2013

After at least eight years of resident requests and a few Leadership Cape presentations, Cape Girardeau’s first dog park, Dog Town Playground, will finally open in early November at Kiwanis Park.

“City staff and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board determined that an existing [City] park would probably be the best location,” said Julia Thompson, City of Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department Director. “Kiwanis Park is a good sized park with lots of open space that is centrally located.”

Community members, along with the dog park committee, developed the initiative leading to the facility’s creation and provided input. The City Council approved a $25,000 allocation, as the dog park was on an approved projects list via casino revenue funding.

“The dog park committee evaluated several dog parks in other cities to gather ideas,” said Parks Manager Brock Davis. “All of the construction and maintenance will be done by City employees and volunteers.”

dog park construction 2Construction began in the middle of September behind Pavilion 2 in Kiwanis Park. Davis said the park will be about an acre, allowing lots of room for pets and owners to run and play. Areas will be designated for both large and small dogs.

According to Davis, the park itself will be user friendly for dogs and owners alike.
“It’ll be totally fenced off with five-foot fencing,” said Davis. “We’ll have signage with park rules, seating, pet waste stations, play features and, of course, fire hydrants.”
Double-gated park entry locations will allow owners and pets to acclimate before entering.
Dog Town Playground will host many future dog-related events, from training to dog shows and workshops.

  1. Jessica, will there be access to running water, or should owners provide their own water for pets?

  2. In some cities there is a requirement that owners show that their dogs have had their vaccinations. Is there a requirement here? It makes good sense.

    • According to Parks and Recreation staff, owners do not have to show in advance that their dogs are current on all vaccinations. However, if a conflict should arise, parties involved will be required to show documentation of current vaccinations.
