10:15 p.m. Oct. 31 Severe Weather Update, Cape Girardeau

Storm damage has occurred various parts of the city of Cape Girardeau this evening. The hardest hit area is in southeast sections of the city. As of 9:30 p.m., more than 1700 customers in the hardest hit area of Cape Girardeau were without power.

City public safety staff, Ameren crews and others are assessing damage in the affected areas and beginning cleanup.

Power lines are down in several locations. Large trees and limbs are down blocking parts of Bloomfield Road. Please avoid downed power lines and trees for your safety. Downed power lines should be considered live. Do not attempt to remove tree limbs that are entangled in downed lines due to the risk of electric shock.

Barricades are being placed around areas where power lines are known to be crossing the streets. The following streets are closed to traffic until further notice:

  • 900 block of Ranney Ave.
  • Locust St.
  • 1200 block of Pacific St.

Parents and children that will be headed to bus stops in the morning before school should be cautious when walking in damage-affected areas.
