Free Community Emergency Response Team Training Starting in September in Cape Girardeau

CERT-2CERT stands for Community Emergency Response Team. CERT is a program that prepares individuals for natural disasters. During this program people will be educated on hazards that may impact their area. Fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations are skills that will be taught through CERT. Training will be done in both the class room and hands on exercises.

CERT is individual and family preparedness before, during and after and event, people helping people, rescuer safety, and doing the greatest good for the greatest number.

Southeast Missouri State University, in conjunction with the City of Cape Girardeau Fire Department, offers a 20-hour CERT Training program. This specific program covers topics such as:CERT-3

  • Disaster Preparedness
  • Disaster Fire Suppression
  • Disaster Medical Operations
  • Light Search & Rescue Operations
  • Disaster Psychology & Team Organization
  • Bio-Terrorism
  • Disaster Simulation

The next session will begin on Sept. 24. Classes will be held on Tuesdays from 8 a.m.- 12 p.m. through Oct. 22., in Training Room B at the Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center.

Southeast also offers a refresher course that is highly recommended to those who have not practiced their CERT skills in over two years. These refresher classes will be scheduled as needed.
