The bridge recently undergoing construction on Cape Rock Drive near Dennis Scivally Park will open to traffic at 4 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 12, according to the City of Cape Girardeau Public Works Department.
Road work will be ongoing in the area as the project has not been completed. The remaining construction can be finished without restricting traffic, but motorists are asked to use caution while bridge work is completed.
Public Works thanks everyone for their patience during the project, which started in early July. An estimated 7,000 motorists use this bridge daily. Cape Rock Drive will be open before Cape Girardeau Public Schools begin on Aug. 14; the new bridge is nearby an extensively residential area and a large elementary school.
During the road work, contractor Zoellner Construction removed the bridge’s existing box culvert structure and replaced it with a new single-span bridge structure. The contract amount was approximately $508,000, and the project was funded through the 2008 Parks and Recreation Stormwater Tax initiative.
