From antique automobiles rallying down the Mighty Mississippi to jet powered school buses and the Aerostar Aerobatic Team, Cape Girardeau was abuzz with planes, trains and automobiles in June! The Great Race visited Cape Girardeau on Tuesday, June 25th and was met with the best community welcome longtime Great Racers had ever seen. Local businesses hosted PitStop Parties to greet the racers as they arrived in Cape Girardeau, generating lots of en route support and enthusiasm. Downtown was full of Great Race vehicles, drivers and navigators in addition to a Cruise-In of local vintage vehicles. As a member of the Great Race Committee’s welcoming team, I got to greet the drivers and navigators as they parked along Main Street and welcome them to Cape Girardeau. They were all so glad to be here and surprised and delighted by the incredible show of support from our community; I was all puffed up with pride for Cape Girardeau by the end of the night!
On June 28th and 29th, the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport hosted the 2013 Cape Girardeau Regional Air Festival. An exciting weekend of aerobatic performances food and family fun ensued, with crowds well exceeding expectations. Kent Pietsch and his Jelly Belly comedy act, Randy Ball in his Mig-17F jet fighter, the Air Force Rapid Strike Simulator and Paul Stender’s jet powered school bus and much more were all hits with the crowd.
