RSVP/VIC Looking for Volunteers for Wheeled Wonders Event, Other Opportunities

rsvp-vic-volunteer-cakeFor nearly 40 years, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and the more recently created Volunteer Intergenerational Center (VIC) have offered fulfilling involvement opportunities within Cape Girardeau and Scott counties.

Many opportunities are available for community involvement through these organizations. One upcoming chance to volunteer is during the Wheeled Wonders Fun Fest event, hosted by Discovery Playhouse, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, on the former Venture/Steve and Barry’s parking lot at West Park Mall. Help is needed taking pictures, handing out fliers, encouraging community involvement and spreading the word about RSVP/VIC.

RSVP began in our area on July 15, 1973 as a way to provide retirees with a way to continue doing fulfilling activities. VIC was started on July 1, 2002 to complement the RSVP program without any age limit.

According to an organizational fact sheet, RSVP/VIC began to help “enhance the quality of life, as well as enrich our society and/or communities.” Together, these two groups have helped create an enthusiasm for volunteer work among different age groups.

VIC was incorporated with RSVP just over 10 years ago, after a Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce Leadership Cape class completed a feasibility study regarding the development of a volunteer center for local communities. The Leadership Cape class and RSVP/VIC discussed the study, and the decision was made for the existing RSVP organization to expand, including volunteers of all ages.

RSVP and VIC do every thing they can to assign every volunteer to something in which they are interested. There are no restrictions on how much time a person may volunteer. Some opportunities require certain skills like computer skills or clerical work, but there are many other opportunities that require little to no skills, or there will be some form of training.

To fill out a volunteering application, visit one of the RSVP/VIC offices, 1219 N. Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau or 105 N. Main in Chaffee, Mo., visit vicrsvp.org or call 573-335-7555 or 573-471-8584.

RSVP/VIC has volunteer opportunities through 124 different not-for-profit agencies, like Discovery Playhouse. For more information on getting involved with these programs, please visit vicrsvp.org.
