The deadline for landlords to register their properties is approaching. On April 12, 2013, all rental properties in city limits should be registered with the City of Cape Girardeau.
In 2012, several City projects focused on efforts to improve the available housing options in Cape Girardeau. Included in these efforts was the new Residential Rental Licensing program that went into effect Oct. 1, 2012.
The new program is an effort to help both tenants and landlords make sure their dwellings are clean, sanitary, fit for human occupancy and comply with all applicable legal requirements of the state and the City, including the 24-item list on our website.
Our Development Services Department sent out 539 letters to notify potential landlords of the new ordinance and have worked with the local media to get the word out.
As of the end of February, we have licensed 133 landlords. They have registered 1698 units.
Since Jan. 1, 2013, we have already received 28 complaints through the new program.
