Fire Department Training Attracts National Attention

A Peer Fitness Training course was held at the City of Cape Girardeau Fire Department’s Station 3 from March 4-8. The course’s goal was to improve firefighter health and safety, and performance of each fire department to meet its community’s needs by certifying firefighters as fitness trainers for their department.

Matt Dennis, Sam Jenne, Steve Mirly and Bryan Stroer of the Cape Girardeau Fire Department took the course. Firefighters from Monett and Blue Springs, Mo., took the course, along with firefighters from Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Tennessee, Texas and Washington. The class’ two instructors were from Phoenix, Ariz., and New York.

The class is jointly put on by the Wellness and Fitness Initiative, International Association of Firefighters and International Association of Fire Chiefs. Schnucks, Saint Francis Medical Center’s Fitness Plus, Cape Girardeau Firefighters Local 1084, and the Cape Girardeau Fireman’s Fund donated snacks and beverages for the participants.
