storytelling-logo-4-webIn describing the wonderful art of storytelling, perhaps renowned storyteller Donald Davis says it best, “I’m an oral filmmaker. In telling stories, I’m taking the pictures that I see in my mind and moving them to your mind. I’ll use anything I have to move those pictures…my body, my voice, my attitude, my emotion, you! I’ll use whatever it takes, because, with storytelling, success is ultimately not ‘Did I say it,’ success is ‘Did you see it?’”

Davis was born in a Southern Appalachian mountain world rich in stories learned from a family of traditional storytellers who have lived on the same Western North Carolina land since 1781. Fellow storyteller Dolores Hydock grew up in Reading, Pennsylvania. She now lives in Birmingham, Ala. and shares funny, affectionate stories about family fireworks, food fads, true love, turnip greens and other peculiarities of everyday life.

Davis and Hydock will share their great stories in Cape Girardeau at the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall on Friday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m.
