City of Cape Girardeau officials, staff and project partners were on hand Friday, Sept. 7 to mark the beginning stages of construction for the new Wastewater Treatment Facility in Cape Girardeau.
Funding for the new facility was made possible by Cape Girardeau voters during the April 2011 election. Estimated project completion is late August 2014.
New Missouri state regulations required Cape Girardeau to increase its wastewater treatment capacity. During wet weather, wastewater could exceed current plant capacity, bypassing the facility and flowing into the Mississippi River. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) no longer permits wastewater bypass. To comply with the new DNR regulations, the City must build a new facility by 2014.
