On Aug. 16 the City of Cape Girardeau’s Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor a trip to the Fabulous Fox Theatre in St. Louis, Mo. to experience the musical phenomenon of Disney’s The Lion King.
Recreation Coordinator Stacey Welter said the department has been planning this trip since February. Every summer, the Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department organizes one theater trip to St. Louis, and this year they decided to do something a little different.
“We normally go to the Muny,” Welter said. “[We] wanted to try something different this year, so we decided to go to the Fox. It will be a fantastic show.”
The Lion King is a Broadway musical based on the 1994 Disney animated film of the same name. The musical debuted July 8, 1997 in Minneapolis, Minn. and was an instant success.
Performers resemble animals of the African Pridelands by wearing elaborate costumes, some including stilts, and giant, hollow puppet shells. With music by Elton John, lyrics by Tim Rice and direction by Julie Taymor, the recipe for success has created the sixth-longest running show in Broadway history.
The Tony-award winning musical is the highest grossing Broadway show of all time, having grossed $853.8 million as of April 2012.
Those attending the show will board a chartered bus at 5 p.m. on Aug. 16 at the Osage Centre, arriving in St. Louis before show time at 8 p.m. The price of $65 includes a ticket and chartered bus ride. A meal is not included, however food and coolers are allowed on the bus in plastic containers.
“This is an award-winning show, fun for the whole family,” Welter said. “By going with us, people don’t have to worry about driving in St. Louis traffic or worry about parking. We drop you off at the front door.”
The deadline for ticket purchase is Aug. 15. For more information, call the A. C. Brase Arena at 573-339-6340.
