Parks and Rec Day, a fun-filled day designed just for kids, will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 13 at the Osage Centre.
The annual event was created over a decade ago by the Southeast Missourian Jr. and Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department. Parks and Rec Day draws hundreds of children in the Cape Girardeau community together for a day of free activities, food and fun.
Stacey Welter, Recreation Coordinator, said that July is national Parks and Recreation month, making it the perfect month to hold Parks and Rec Day.
“We try to get kids involved with recreation and getting active, and participating in different stuff and being social,” Welter said.
Activities and vendors participating in this year’s event include a petting zoo by Lazy L Safari, a giant, blow-up obstacle course, free Dairy Queen ice cream, free Good Humor popsicles, and “Bingo for Books,” an activity presented by the Southeast Missourian Jr.
The Humane Society of Southeast Missouri will be bringing ready-to-adopt pets, and those who choose to make a donation to the Humane Society will be registered to win St. Louis Cardinals tickets, Magic House ,St. Louis Science Center tickets and more.
“Since Tracker’s [the Southeast Missourian Jr.’s] mascot, we try to help out the Humane Society as much as possible,” Welter said.
Parks and Rec Day will also feature a game area, a craft area and a toddler turf area, making the event fun and open to all ages.
The fun continues at Cape Splash following Parks and Rec Day, where children’s admission into the park with a paying adult is free from 3 to 7 p.m.
