Shawnee Park Center Gives Shelter to Rising Stars in Cape Girardeau

With increasing financial problems the Family Resource Center closed its doors last year, leaving dozens of children without a dependable after school program. Fortunately for the kids, the local Boys and Girls Club has now partnered with the City of Cape Girardeau’s Shawnee Park Center to create the Rising Stars program.

“The [Shawnee] Park Center wanted to start a youth program, so the Boys and Girls Club provides the programming and they provide the facilities,” says local Boys and Girls Club Interim Director Vicki Lawson.

The Rising Stars program provides after school homework assistance, life skills programming and gives children a safe, happy learning environment. The children do not just sit around the Center though. They also get opportunities to go on field trips such as their recent trip to Southeast Missouri State University to eat a meal prepared by hospitality class students.

The Boys and Girls Club has seen a great increase in kids participating in the program with 30 to 35 youth participating a day at the Shawnee Park Center and over 150 total children spanning all of the local sites such as the Lighthouse Ministries building and the Central Junior High School.

The program costs just $20 a school year. Though the program’s primary focus is on disadvantaged or at-risk youth, any child between the grades of kindergarten and eighth grade can join. For more information on Rising Stars call the Boys and Girls club at 573-335-7141 or visit
