This week, City leaders will celebrate the successful completion of a project first approved by voters in 2005. Media and the public are invited to a short ribbon cutting ceremony for the Big Bend Road project scheduled for Wednesday, March 7 at 11:30 a.m. The event will be along the new Big Bend Road sidewalk between Johnson and Fifth streets (VIEW MAP). Street parking is available along the northbound lane.
The project was funded by the Transportation Trust Fund (TTF). This half-cent sales tax has been renewed by Cape Girardeau voters every five years since 1995 including in 2005 when it passed with 81.6% voter approval.
Big Bend Road was widened and replaced from Olive Street to 1300 feet north of Bertling Street. The casino development on the south end of the project covered the rerouting of Big Bend Street. Detours began in July 2010 and the road was fully open in January 2012.
