The City of Cape Girardeau is embarking on a new creative endeavor. Through the efforts of local artists, the business community, city officials and engaged citizens; the City has identified that public art is important and has recognized this in the City’s Comprehensive Plan and through efforts to enhance Downtown through the City’s Strategic Dream Initiative.
Sketch concepts from the DREAM plan include public sculpture.
A committee has been established to review and recommend policy to the City Council within the next year. The committee anticipates evaluating other municipal agencies policies and aligning the goals with other important planning and development efforts within the city in order to bring an enhanced visual art experience to our citizens and visitors. Committee members include Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce Vice President Tim Arbeiter, Southeast Missouri State University Associate Professor Chris Wubbena, Arts Council of Southeast Missouri Executive Director Murielle Wyman, John Buckner, Old Town Cape Executive Director Marla Mills, and the City of Cape Girardeau’s Parks and Recreation Director Julia Thompson.
The committee has met several times to establish a framework on how to move forward and anticipates presenting initial ideas to Cape’s elected officials within the next six months. For additional information, please contact Julia Thompson at 573-339-6340.
