Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day was held on Oct. 15, at Arena Park. This event helps Cape Girardeau’s residents dispose of items not accepted in their weekly trash service.
There were 361 vehicles bringing over 42,625 pounds of hazardous waste to the collection site this year. Paper shredding services were also available and resulted in the collection of 3,641 pounds of paper. During the last Household Hazardous Waste Day held in 2008, just over 17,000 pounds of material, 200 gallons of used oil and 100 gallons of used antifreeze were collected.
Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day is scheduled every other year, depending on grant funding. This year’s event was made possible through a grant from the Southeast Missouri Solid Waste Management District. Grant funding was not available in 2010.
