No New Interest in Open City Council Seat

Filing for City Council starts in less than a week and no new candidates have picked up petition forms. Ward 4 City Council Representative Loretta Schneider and Ward 5 City Council Representative Mark Lanzotti will be filing but no one else from either ward has started the petition process.

Ward 3, among our physically smaller wards in the center of the city, has not had any candidates surface. City Council Representative Debra Tracy has decided not to pursue another term as she recently discussed on the Cape Chronicle television show.

To run for City Council in the April 2012 election, candidates must first pick up a petition in the City Manager & Clerk’s Office. Potential candidates may file between Oct. 25 and Nov. 22, for the April 2012 election. If more than two petitions are received for any one ward position, a primary election will be held on Feb. 7. The primary election narrows the candidates to two for each ward.

City Council member requirements:

  • Must be a registered voter
  • At least 21 years of age
  • Resident of city 2 years prior to election
  • Resident of ward for 90 days prior to first filing date (Oct. 25)
