The Cape Girardeau Safe Communities Program, in conjunction with the MoDOT Traffic and Highway Safety Division and the Cape Girardeau Police Department, kicked off its annual Team Spirit Leadership Training Conference on Sunday, July 24 at the Plaza by Ray’s Conference Center in Cape Girardeau.

The Team Spirit Leadership Training Program is a peer-to-peer training program designed to empower high school-age youth to take an active role in promoting safe driving habits by tackling underage drinking, drinking and driving, texting and driving, speeding and lack of safety belt use.

“Motor vehicle crashes continue to be the leading cause of death and injury for youth under the age of 21,” said Sharee Galnore, Team Spirit Coordinator. “While at the training, each team develops an action plan addressing identified traffic safety concerns at their school and in their community.”

Students return to their high schools throughout Southeast Missouri this fall with the plan they developed while at Team Spirit. The plan addresses life-saving traffic safety measures they will implement at their respective schools.

“We believe that local people solve local problems. Our goal is to educate and empower teens to make a difference and save lives,” said Galnore.
