A new piece of student-crafted artwork now graces an area along Broadway in Cape Girardeau, funded through a private venture and selected through a proposal process.

Emergence, a two-part steel sculpture designed by Deanna Hoffman, a Southeast Missouri State University sculpture student, was selected to serve as an inspirational focal point for the Spradling House at 1304 Broadway. The earthy dark sculpture, standing roughly nine feet tall, is a reflection of nature — from the rocky bottom to its emerging leafy top, symbolizing something growing and persisting from difficult times.

Rick Hetzel from R. Hetzel Properties funded this selection a one-of-a-kind, outdoor artwork designed by a Southeast art student. The Spradling House Sculpture Grant was created to award one student $750 for materials, design, fabrication, installation costs, and transportation to the site.

A call for proposals was announced to students, and an assortment of proposals of various styles and compositions complementary to the Spradling House exterior quickly came in.  The winning proposal was selected in April 2016.

The sculpture, installed in October 2016, will remain on display for a year, at which time the artwork returns to the artist.
