Staff Profile: Fitness and Wellness Coordinator Christine Paige

After going to Southeast Missouri State University to earn her B.S. in health management, exercise science and a minor in nutrition, Paige went back to school to obtain a Masters of Science in nutrition and exercise science in spring 2013. She also is certified in group fitness, personal training, adult weight management, Zumba, Aqua Zumba, Piloxing, CPR, first aid and AED. Her latest goal is becoming a Registered Dietitian.

Being such a motivated and driven worker makes Paige the perfect addition to City Staff. Christine’s position as Fitness and Wellness Coordinator was recently added to assist with increasing physical fitness in the workplace. Her goals include incorporating wellness initiatives, making more programs available to Cape Girardeau’s citizens, and getting City Staff more acquainted with wellness and more comfortable learning about it. Paige mentioned possible future activities, such as seminars and walking programs, to get people on track with living a healthy lifestyle.

Paige is originally from St. Genevieve Mo., and started working with the City on Oct. 7. As fitness and wellness coordinator, Paige will aid programs and events as well as assist clients in living an overall healthier lifestyle. Clients can come to Paige for setting a fitness goal, making a fitness plan, beginning training sessions, one-on-one nutritional counseling or just for that little extra push to reach their health goals.

Paige said that one of the things she enjoys most is working with clients and helping them reach their goals. She really looks forward to seeing how their attitudes and self-confidence change the longer they work with her.

Paige said this is exactly the type of job she was looking for after graduating.

“I wanted to be a fitness and wellness coordinator or a fitness and wellness director. Since completing my degree through the university, I plan on becoming a dietitian and I still want to work in a fitness facility and do more weight loss, nutrition counseling, things along those lines,” Paige said.

Paige also teaches group fitness classes for Piloxing, which is a combined Pilates and kickboxing class, Zumba, and a class called Butts and Guts. She is currently working with the Parks and Recreation Department to hopefully offer more group fitness classes at a variety of times.

Before becoming a full-time City employee, Paige studied abroad in Germany, Switzerland and Paris over winter break, completed an internship at Hilton Head Health, a weight loss resort in South Carolina, and worked as a fitness specialist in St. Louis. Many of these activities overlapped with her completing her 20 hours a week as a graduate assistant of fitness and wellness at Southeast.

When not working, Paige enjoys hanging out with friends and family having movie nights, playing volleyball, and preparing for the holidays.
