“Dinghy” Dave Pike, a pickleball enthusiast from Michigan, is traveling more than 6,000 miles across the country in a small watercraft, stopping to play his beloved sport in various locations along the way.

Follow Pike on his journey on his blog.

Pike stopped recently in Cape Girardeau and received a warm welcome, including a proclamation from Mayor Harry Rediger marking Aug. 18, 2016 as “Dave Pike Pickleball Day” in Cape Girardeau.

The proclamation’s text reads as follows:

Whereas,  Dave Pike, 67 year old male from Grand Haven, MI, is known to be addicted to pickleball and loves to  share his passion and knowledge of pickleball; and

Whereas,  cancer survivor and boat enthusiast,  Dave Pike, is spreading the word  of pickleball to  20 states on his 6,000 mile journey in a 15 foot dingy boat along the Intracoastal Waterways with his sidekick Wilson; and

Whereas, Dave Pike is playing pickleball in only one place in Missouri, and that place will be in the great city of Cape Girardeau; and

Whereas, pickleball is known to be a great form of exercise that works on your balance and energy; and

Whereas, physical exercise controls weight, combats health conditions and diseases, improves mood, boosts energy, promotes better sleep, puts the spark back into your sex life, and is fun; and

Whereas, pickleball has proven to be a good mixture of enjoyment and social interaction, as well as competitive; and

Whereas, with over 2 million players, pickleball is the fastest growing sport in North America, and is  estimated  to have 8 million players by 2018; and

Whereas, the places to play pickleball have risen 64% since 2010; and

Whereas,  in  2016, the first US Open Pickleball Championship was held in Naples, FL. Over 800 athletes competed  on  46 courts with $25,000 in prize money and more than 3,000 fans filled hotel rooms. Participants in the tournament competed at  various ages ranging from the youngest player at 12 years old to the oldest who was 89.

Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved   that I, Harry Rediger, Mayor of the City of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, do hereby proclaim August 18, 2016, as

Dave Pike Pickleball Day

Dave Pike is the ambassador extraordinaire of pickleball. I urge all the great citizens of Cape Girardeau to come out and give pickleball a try; see if you become hooked on the fastest growing sport in North America.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused to be affixed the Seal of the City of Cape Girardeau, Missouri this 18th day of August, 2016. — Harry Rediger, Mayor
