It’s official: Cape Girardeau’s new Transfer Station will begin operations in just over one week.
After years of planning, and about 10 months since breaking ground, regular hours begin at the new location on Corporate Circle Monday, June 13. Hours are Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
Operations cease at the end of business June 10 at the old Transfer Station facility, located in the 2500 block of South Sprigg Street.
The Transfer Station is where solid waste and other materials are collected and prepared to be moved out of the city to an approved landfill. The project has been among the City’s top capital improvement needs in recent years because of challenges with the current location, the need for more capacity to handle additional commercial and residential growth, and a drive to make the facility’s operations more sustainable.
Originally built in the 1980s, the older Transfer Station’s maintenance issues grew over time. Older scales, equipment and the building itself made operations less efficient and planning for future growth more difficult. Unlike the former facility, the new facility accommodates the City’s residential recycling materials.
A ribbon cutting event was held on May 23 for the completed Wastewater Treatment Facility and the new Transfer Station.
