Original message:

Contractor Fronabarger Concreters will close Independence Street at the Gordonville/East Rodney Drive intersection for construction of a roundabout beginning early morning Tuesday, Oct. 4.

The entire intersection will be closed for a period of 60 days. Motorists are urged to seek alternate routes when possible to lessen congestion on the neighborhood street detours. Detours will be marked as follows:

  • South Broadview Street for Independence traffic east of the intersection
  • Themis Street for East Rodney traffic west of the intersection
  • Silver Springs for eastbound Independence traffic

Gordonville Road at the Independence intersection has been closed since early August to facilitate the relocation of underground utilities and enable the contractor to start working on construction of the roundabout.

The $741,000 roundabout project is being partly funded by the Transportation Trust Fund as approved by voters in 2010. The Small Urban Surface Transportation Program, a federal grant, will cover 80 percent of the cost.

Coming soon….

Independence Street will also be closed at the nearby Silver Springs intersection at some point during the same closure period so as to take advantage of lessened traffic flow on Independence. This will expedite the completion of construction of a cross-road drainage structure for the Whitener Detention basin project.   A separate announcement will be sent out later when a closure date is established for the second intersection.
