Weather permitting, Hopper is expected to reopen to traffic the week of Thanksgiving.

After many months of infrastructure and dirt work along both Hopper Road and the new portion of Veterans Memorial Drive, road paving began on Friday, Nov. 4 and continued Thursday, Nov. 10.

Paving began with eastbound Hopper and northbound Veterans Memorial. As of Monday, Nov. 14, the contractor expects to pave southbound Veterans Memorial on Wednesday, Nov. 16 and the final (westbound) lane of Hopper on Thursday, Nov. 17.

Once paving is complete, the roads’ surfaces must remain untouched for several days to be fully ready for vehicular travel. Barricades will remain in place during that process. Driving around barricades while the concrete road is curing will cause the surface to become faulty and could result in damage to vehicles. Please refrain from driving around barricades during the final days of this project.

Weather permitting, Hopper is expected to reopen to traffic the week of Thanksgiving.

Once Hopper reopens to traffic, remaining work will continue on this massive project as weather conditions allow through the fall and winter months. Remaining components include sidewalks, final utility work, driveways, lighting, and more.

Drivers are asked to use caution in the area once Hopper reopens, as crews will remain onsite completing remaining work.

Additionally, Cape Special Road District (Cape Girardeau County) road crews will be completing work along County Road 314 during the week of Nov. 14, resulting in a road closures between 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. near Twin Lakes Subdivision. County crews have been working with Cape Girardeau city staff to minimize any additional travel issues in the area. Emergency vehicles will still be able to maintain service to homes, should the need arise. The Cape County road work is expected to be complete within a few weeks, weather permitting.
