Portions from a Missouri Department of Transportation news release
Sidewalks near the intersection of Independence Street and East Rodney Drive, connecting to the Cape LaCroix Recreation Trail, will now be a possibility through grant funding.
Cape Girardeau was recently named one of eight Southeast Missouri communities selected to receive a portion of $1.74 million in federal transportation alternative funds for improvement projects, such as sidewalks.
The City applied for funding for sidewalks in multiple areas of town, including Independence/East Rodney/Trail area and Cape Rock Drive near Dennis Scivally Park. Public input about sidewalks in those locations was sought through an online survey in October 2016. The Independence/East Rodney/Trail area was chosen and funded.
Sidewalk design will take place in 2017, with construction expected in 2018.
The City will receive $201,455 federal funding for the project, and will provide $56,821 towards the project. The City’s portion of the project will be paid for by the Transportation Trust Fund 5 (TTF-5) sales tax approved by voters.
About Transportation Alternative Funds
Federal transportation alternative funds are set aside by Congress specifically for transportation enhancements, allowing communities to develop projects that “improve the quality of a community and enhance the travel experience.”
Local agencies could apply for funds to develop a variety of projects located in rural and urban communities to create safe, accessible, attractive and environmentally-sensitive communities where people want to live, work and recreate.
